‘Failed Political Arrangement’- Gachagua Strikes At Government Deals

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has disclosed plans to travel to London for what he termed a short trip without disclosing his itinerary.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), offered limited details about the visit, saying only that he needed time abroad to organise a few things and prepare for upcoming political engagements.

The DCP leader intimated that the London trip was aimed at mobilizing resources to finance his campaigns, which are gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.

Gachagua’s remarks were made during the unveiling of John Mwaura as the party’s preferred candidate for the Kiambu gubernatorial race.

During this event, the former Deputy President took the opportunity to address the current political climate, leveling accusations against President William Ruto. Gachagua claimed that the President is actively undermining the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), asserting that the internal tensions recently observed within the party are the direct result of a failed political arrangement, rather than simple disagreements over electoral zoning.

The DCP leader further alleged that senior ODM figures, including Oburu Oginga, Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga, and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, had entered into an undisclosed pact with President Ruto. According to Gachagua, this agreement has since soured, and the trio’s recent criticism of the government stems from unmet expectations tied to that specific deal.

Reflecting on the shifting landscape of Kenyan politics, the DCP leader expressed rare regret over his own political choices during the 2022 election. He suggested that, in hindsight, supporting opposition leader Raila Odinga might have yielded a different outcome for the country, marking a significant shift in his public rhetoric regarding his past alliances.

“I am rushing to London for a short while to organise a few things. I will be looking for fuel and other things; you know that I must prepare myself,” he stated.

Strategic Shifts And Political Alliances

Regarding his party’s roadmap, Gachagua announced that the DCP will field candidates across the country under its “Skiza Ground” strategy. The only exceptions, he noted, would be Nairobi and Mombasa, where broader opposition consultations will be held to determine joint candidates. He emphasized that talks are currently ongoing within an emerging opposition coalition to agree on a unified approach.

The goal, according to Gachagua, is to avoid splitting votes in key races, with consensus guiding which party ultimately fields candidates in various constituencies.
