Tanzania National Athletics Championships Set To Ignite Talent In Kibaha Ahead Of 2026 Season

Tanzania National Athletics Championships are scheduled to take place at the end of May 2026 in Kibaha District, Coast Region, at the Filbert Bayi Sports School.
The championships are part of the national athletics calendar and are expected to play a key role in selecting athletes for international competitions.
According to the President of the Athletics Tanzania (AT), Rogath John Stephen, organizing national championships is a constitutional responsibility aimed at identifying talent and strengthening the country’s athletics development pathway.
He said the event will also serve as a key performance test for athletes who may be selected for international qualification events held at World Athletics- certified venues, depending on their results.
The Championships will feature both track and field events, bringing together established athletes and emerging talents from across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. The aim is to deepen competition levels and continue building a strong pipeline of athletes capable of competing internationally.

He noted that Tanzania has previously benefited from similar national competitions. Following the 1998 edition, Tanzania athletes went on to deliver strong performances at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, where the country secured medals in marathon event through performance by Simon Mrashani, who claimed silver in 2:09:42, and Geway Suja, whon earned bronze in 2:9:50. These results marked an important step in Tanzania’s long-distance running development.
Further progress was recorded in subsequent years, including strong performance at the World Continental Championships in Melbourne and the World Cross Country Championships in Brussels in 2001, as well as a team gold medal at the World Half Marathon Championships in Vilamoura in 2003, where Fabian Joseph also secured an individual silver medal.

The 2006 championships are expected to be highly competitive, with athletes from across the country taking part. Early trials have already indicated improved standards, reflecting growing depth in both track and field disciplines.
