Ol Kalou Constituency By-Election: Samuel Muchina Nyagah Secures UDA Ticket Amid Tight Race
Samuel Muchina Nyagah has officially emerged as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominee for the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election following a high-stakes primary held on Friday, May 8, 2026.
The ruling party confirmed his victory in a statement on Saturday, May 9, setting the stage for a critical face-off in the general by-election scheduled for July 16.
Despite the significant political weight attached to the exercise, the day was defined by a stark contrast between the intense rivalry of the candidates and a notably quiet showing at the ballot boxes.
A Narrow Victory Amidst Low Turnout
The contest was remarkably tight, with Nyagah garnering 3,221 votes to narrowly defeat his primary challenger, George Wambugu Kanuri. Kanuri, a popular figure often referred to as “Delight,” pushed the frontrunner to the limit by securing 3,077 votes.
The narrow margin of just 144 votes created a palpable sense of anxiety at the tallying center, as supporters from both camps watched the figures fluctuate throughout the evening.
Peter Njoroge Mugo followed in a distant third place with 1,049 votes, while the remaining seven candidates, including Mary Nyokabi Kamau and Peter Chuchu Njuguna, shared the fractional remainder of the spoils.
While the political temperature among the aspirants was boiling, voter turnout remained low, with only about 8,000 residents casting their ballots. This figure represents a fraction of the 72,000 voters registered in Ol Kalou during the 2022 General Election.
The subdued participation suggests that while the political class is deeply engaged in the succession maneuvers, a vast majority of the electorate may be waiting for the final contest in July to make their voices heard. Additionally, recent logistical shifts and the postponement of the exercise earlier in the week likely contributed to the lukewarm attendance at the polling stations.
The Road to the July 16 Face-Off
UDA National Elections Board member Jimmy Kahindi officially handed the nomination certificate to Nyagah at Mumbi Primary School.
During his acceptance speech, Nyagah characterized the process as free and transparent, though he was quick to pivot toward the need for reconciliation.
The Ol Kalou by-election is widely viewed as a decisive test of grassroots mobilization and a barometer of shifting loyalties within the Mt. Kenya region.
UDA’s victory in the primaries comes just as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) kicked off its own nomination exercise on May 9.
The DCP, led by Secretary General Hezron Obaga, has expressed full commitment to a credible process, signaling that the July 16 poll will be a direct clash between the established ruling party and a rising regional alternative.
