Dennis Oliech reveals what matters most

Former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech used a football reunion at Nyayo Stadium to call for peace in Kenya while urging young players to combine talent with discipline if they are to build successful careers.

Oliech was among the former football stars who attended the Manchester United Fans versus Arsenal Fans exhibition match at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, August 9, 2026. The entertaining encounter ended 5-4 on penalties in favour of the Manchester United supporters after the two sides had battled to a draw in normal time.

The former Kenya striker was one of the notable figures at the event, where he interacted with fans and spoke about the importance of football in bringing Kenyans together. “I will advice the upcoming players to put God first, the next is discipline. If you don’t have discipline, if you talent, you can never go anywhere,” he said.

His career took him from Mathare United to the international stage, where he became one of the most recognisable Kenyan footballers of his generation.

Oliech’s journey from Mathare to Europe

Oliech began his senior career at Mathare United before moving abroad to Qatar, where he played for Al-Arabi. His performances earned him a move to France and Nantes, marking the beginning of an extended spell in European football.

He later joined AJ Auxerre, where he spent several seasons and became one of the most prominent Kenyan players competing in France. His career also included a spell with AC Ajaccio before he moved to Dubai CSC in the United Arab Emirates. He eventually returned home and played for Gor Mahia. Career records list Auxerre as the club where he made the most appearances.

Oliech was a key figure for more than a decade for Kenya. He made his international debut in 2002 and represented the Harambee Stars until 2016. Transfermarkt lists him with 76 international caps and 34 goals, making him one of Kenya’s most experienced and prolific international forwards.

His international career included participation in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations, when Kenya reached the tournament finals in Tunisia. Oliech scored during the team’s campaign and was part of a generation that helped raise the profile of Kenyan football on the continental stage.
