Former Arsenal captain and World Cup winner Patrick Vieira has been named the new head coach of the Senegal national football team.

The decision brings one of modern football’s most respected icons back to his birthplace to lead the Lions of Teranga into an ambitious new era following the departure of former manager Pape Thiaw.

Born in Dakar in 1976 before relocating to France as a child, Vieira’s prospective appointment represents a deeply personal full-circle moment. While he earned international glory wearing the blue shirt of Les Bleus, his connection to Senegalese football remained strong throughout his life.

He co-founded the Diambars Football Academy in Saly, an initiative dedicated to developing world-class talent and providing educational opportunities for youth across West Africa. Taking charge of the senior national squad marks his debut in international management, allowing him to channel decades of elite European experience back into Senegalese football.

Long before stepping into the dugout, Vieira established himself as one of the premier central midfielders in football history. His professional career began in France with Cannes, where his commanding physical presence and composure on the ball earned him a high-profile move to AC Milan. In 1996, he joined Arsenal, where he became the heart and soul of Arsène Wenger’s midfield.

During his nine years in North London, Vieira made 406 appearances, scoring 29 goals while lifting three Premier League titles and four FA Cups. Most notably, he captained the legendary 2003–04 “Invincibles” squad, navigating an entire 38-game league campaign undefeated. His intense midfield rivalry with Manchester United captain Roy Keane defined an entire era of English football.

Following his iconic spell at Arsenal, Vieira added further silverware to his cabinet in Serie A with Juventus and Inter Milan, before concluding his playing career at Manchester City in 2011. On the international stage, Vieira earned 107 senior caps for France, assisting Emmanuel Petit in the 1998 FIFA World Cup final victory over Brazil and playing a pivotal role in France’s UEFA Euro 2000 triumph.

Legendary Career and Managerial Foundations

Vieira’s transition into coaching began immediately after retirement at Manchester City, where he worked within the youth academy and led the Elite Development Squad. His first senior management role came in 2016 with Major League Soccer club New York City FC.

Over two and a half seasons in the United States, he transformed NYCFC into a title contender, qualifying for back-to-back playoff appearances while instilling an attractive, possession-based style of play.

His success in Major League Soccer earned him a return to European club football, where he took over at French side OGC Nice in 2018. He guided the Ligue 1 club to a seventh-place finish in his debut season and secured UEFA Europa League qualification in his second year.

Vieira then returned to English football to manage Crystal Palace in 2021, completely overhauling the team’s tactical identity in the Premier League, leading them to an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, and receiving widespread praise for his integration of young talent.

The Next Chapter with Senegal

After his time in London, he returned to France to manage a youthful RC Strasbourg squad through a competitive top-flight campaign before making the move to Italy to manage Genoa CFC in Serie A.

Vieira now prepares to step into international management with a Senegal squad possessing world-class talent playing across Europe’s top leagues.

His immediate focus will be guiding the Lions of Teranga through upcoming continental qualifiers and preparing the team for future Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup campaigns.

Combining his top-tier European tactical background with an intrinsic understanding of Senegalese football, Vieira aims to establish Senegal as a dominant force on the global stage.
