3 Reasons Governor James Orengo Left Seme Amid Political Tension During Burial of Eliud Nyikal Okaka

Siaya Governor James Orengo was caught in a tense political atmosphere in Seme, Kisumu County, during the burial of Mzee Eliud Nyikal Okaka, where disruptions at the funeral led to heightened security concerns and early withdrawal of some leaders.

The burial, held at Ridore Primary School, was meant to be a solemn farewell to the 104-year-old father of Seme MP Dr. James Nyikal. However, the event escalated into a politically charged moment marked by confrontations, interruptions, and an early closure of formal proceedings by clergy.

Below are the three key reasons Governor Orengo maintained a defiant stance and ultimately left the venue under tense conditions.

1. Disruption of a Sacred Funeral Ceremony

One of the main reasons behind Orengo’s reaction was the disruption of a solemn burial service.

The funeral, which had gathered family members, religious leaders, and senior political figures, was interrupted when clashes broke out within the tented area. The situation escalated to the point where security personnel had to escort leaders, including Governor Orengo, away from the immediate scene.

Religious leaders eventually intervened and called for an early burial, abandoning the usual program of speeches and tributes in order to restore order and preserve dignity.

Orengo later expressed gratitude to the residents of Seme despite the disruption, noting the emotional significance of the event.

2. Allegations of Political Intimidation and “Organized Chaos”

A second reason for Orengo’s firm stance was his interpretation of the incident as politically motivated.

He described the chaos as a deliberate attempt to intimidate him and disrupt his political engagements. According to his remarks, the situation escalated beyond a normal public disturbance, with claims of coordinated disruption and the use of forceful crowd control measures.

Despite the tense environment, Orengo maintained that such actions would not deter his political direction or public service agenda.

He strongly condemned the incident, terming it a “national disgrace” and emphasizing the need to protect dignity even in politically sensitive gatherings such as funerals.

3. Commitment to the Linda Mwananchi Movement

The third key factor was Orengo’s continued commitment to the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which he referenced as central to his political mission.

He framed the disruption in Seme as evidence of growing resistance from political opponents uncomfortable with the movement’s influence and message.

While other leaders focused on celebrating the legacy of the late Mzee Nyikal—particularly his contributions to mentorship and education—Orengo used the moment to reaffirm his political stance.

He emphasized that intimidation tactics would not weaken the movement, stating that its purpose is to amplify and defend the voice of ordinary citizens.

Closing Perspective

Although the burial proceeded under tense conditions, the events in Seme highlighted rising political friction in the region.

Governor James Orengo’s departure from the venue reflected the intensity of the situation and his continued resolve amid what he described as coordinated attempts at political intimidation.
