3 Reasons James Orengo Left Seme Defiant Despite Political Intimidation
Siaya Governor James Orengo has remained steadfast following a day of high tension in Seme, Kisumu County, where political friction disrupted the burial of Mzee Eliud Nyikal Okaka.
The event, which drew several high-ranking leaders to Ridore Primary School, was meant to honor the 104-year-old father of Seme MP Dr. James Nyikal. Instead, the ceremony became a flashpoint for rival factions, leading to chaotic scenes that forced the clergy to abandon the traditional program to prevent further violence.
A Sacred Send-off Interrupted by Chaos
The first reason behind the Governor’s defiant stance was the blatant disregard for the sanctity of the funeral. As groups clashed within the funeral tent, the atmosphere turned hostile, eventually forcing security teams to escort Orengo and other dignitaries away from the immediate fray. The disruption reached a level where the religious leaders presiding over the service had to intervene, calling for an immediate burial without the customary political tributes that usually characterize such gatherings in the region.
“To the great people of Seme, I extend my deepest gratitude for the overwhelming love and the heroic welcome you gave me today as I paid my final respects to the late Eliud Nyikal Okaka,” he said.
Resisting the Tactics of “Hired Chaos”

A second factor in Orengo’s refusal to back down was his assessment that the disruption was a calculated attempt at political intimidation. He described the interference as a “national disgrace,” specifically targeting the movement he leads. Despite the presence of teargas and the physical nature of the confrontations, the Siaya Governor made it clear that such tactics would not achieve their intended goal of silencing his political voice or slowing the momentum of his current initiatives.
“It is both shameful and a national disgrace that a solemn send-off could be disrupted… The situation became so tense that the clergy had to cut the service short, calling for an immediate burial without speeches to preserve order and dignity,” Orengo stated.
The Unshakable Mission of Linda Mwananchi
Finally, the most significant reason Orengo left Seme with his head held high was his commitment to the Linda Mwananchi Movement. He framed the hostility in Seme as a sign of desperation from opponents who are unsettled by the movement’s message. While other leaders like Governors Anyang’ Nyong’o and Gladys Wanga chose to focus their post-event reflections solely on Mzee Nyikal’s legacy of mentorship and education, Orengo used the moment to reaffirm his dedication to his political mission.
“But let it be clearly understood; no amount of intimidation, no teargas, no hired chaos, and no acts of desperation will silence the Linda Mwananchi Movement,” he said.
“Linda Mwananchi is a force of the people, unstoppable, unshaken, and unwavering in its mission to defend and uplift the voice of every Kenyan.”
While the burial eventually proceeded under heavy tension, the day’s events have highlighted a growing political divide. For Orengo, leaving the venue was not a retreat, but a transition to a more vocal defense of his platform against what he terms “the forces of intimidation.”
