The Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 that concluded on Sunday produced standout performances as the first relay teams secured their places at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship Budapest 26 scheduled for 11–13 September.

The action in Gaborone centered on the mixed relay events, where the top six teams in both the 4x100m and 4x400m finals earned automatic qualification for Budapest.

Jamaica led the charge in the mixed 4x100m, delivering a record-breaking run of 39.62 seconds to improve on their own world record set in the heats. Canada followed in second place after previously setting a world record during Saturday’s rounds, confirming their elite sprinting depth. The United States, Germany, Nigeria, and Spain also booked their places, forming a strong lineup for Budapest.

In the mixed 4x400m, the United States produced one of the most dominant performances of the weekend. Their winning time of 3:07.47 shattered the championship record and reinforced their strength in the longer relay format. Jamaica secured second place with a national record of 3:08.24, while Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Italy, Kenya, and Spain completed the list of qualifiers.

The Gaborone event also played a major role in shaping qualification for the World Athletics Championships Beijing 27. A total of 72 automatic relay places were confirmed across six disciplines. While the majority were decided during Saturday’s heats, Sunday’s second qualifying rounds finalized the remaining positions, ensuring a competitive global field for Beijing.

Among the standout moments, Botswana’s men’s 4x400m team delivered a historic performance on home soil. Their winning time of 2:54.47 not only secured qualification but also broke the competition record and ranked as the third-fastest time ever recorded. The home crowd witnessed a defining moment for Botswana athletics.

The United States claimed victory in the men’s 4x100m with 37.43, narrowly missing the competition record, while Jamaica dominated the women’s 4x100m in 42.00. Norway surprised many by winning the women’s 4x400m with a world-leading national record of 3:20.96, adding another highlight to an already impressive weekend.
