Alphonce Simbu: The Evolution of Global Athletics Icon, Tanzania’s Premier Brand
Deep in Mampando Village in Ikungi District, Singida Region, a young boy once dreamed of becoming one of the greatest athletes Tanzania has ever produced. Years later, that boy, Alphonce Simbu, has grown into an international athletics star, a Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) soldier and one of the biggest sporting brands carrying Tanzania’s name across the world.
Simbu’s journey from the rural village of Mampando to global athletics success is a story of discipline, sacrifice and determination. Raised in a modest environment in central Tanzania, few could have imagined that the young boy from Singida would one day stand on some of the world’s biggest athletics stages competing against elite runners from powerful nations.
What Defines the Discipline of a World Champion?

Today, Alphonce Simbu has become a symbol of hope for many young Tanzanians from rural communities who dream of succeeding through sports. His rise proves that talent can come from any corner of the country when combined with hard work and commitment.
The international athlete recently added another major milestone to his growing legacy after winning the 2025 Sports Personality of the Year award. The Staff Sergeant defeated other top Tanzanian sports stars, including Young Africans S.C. striker Clement Mzize and boxer Salmini Khamis, to claim the prestigious title.
The victory was historic as it made Simbu the first athlete since the awards were introduced to win the honor twice within four years, underlining his consistency and dominance in Tanzanian athletics.
His success at the awards followed an incredible year on the international stage. Among his greatest achievements was winning the gold medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo, Japan. The victory made him the first Tanzanian athlete to win gold at the global competition, creating a new chapter in the country’s athletics history.
Apart from his world title triumph, Simbu also finished second at the famous Boston Marathon in the United States, becoming only the third Tanzanian runner to achieve such a feat after Gabriel Geay and legendary marathon runner Juma Ikangaa.
His remarkable performances continued in December 2025 when he finished second in the 25-kilometre Kolkata race in India, further proving his consistency among the world’s best long-distance runners.
How Does a Local Hero Become a Global Brand?

Despite becoming an international star, Simbu’s roots in Mampando Village remain an important part of his identity. For many people in Singida, his success is not only personal but also a source of pride for the entire community and region.
His achievements have also transformed him into more than just an athlete. Simbu is now increasingly viewed as an international brand capable of promoting Tanzania globally through sports.
The Director of Ntua Communications Ltd, Moses Simon, whose company manages Simbu’s brand, believes the athlete’s success is a result of discipline, hard work and dedication.
“Right now, Simbu is an international brand. He is highly respected globally and his name continues to grow internationally. This is the right time for stakeholders and companies to work with him so they can also promote themselves while Simbu continues enjoying the rewards of his running career,” said Moses Simon.
Simbu’s achievements have also gone hand in hand with the contribution of his coach, Antony Mwingereza, who won the 2025 Coach of the Year award. Like Simbu, Mwingereza made history by becoming the first coach to win the award twice.
The story of Alphonce Simbu is not only about medals and trophies. It is a story about a young boy from Mampando Village who dared to dream big and eventually carried Tanzania’s flag onto the world stage.
From the dusty roads of Ikungi District in Singida Region to becoming a world champion and two-time Sports Personality of the Year winner, Alphonce Simbu continues to inspire a new generation of Tanzanians that greatness can begin from even the smallest village.
