Harambee Stars To Test Match Fitness Against Group D Rivals In AFCON 2027 Qualifiers

Harambee Stars will face a rigorous testing ground in the journey toward the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after being drawn into a competitive Group D following the official draw ceremony in Cairo.

Kenya, alongside co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania, has already secured an automatic slot for the biennial showpiece, yet the team will participate in the qualifying phase to maintain a competitive edge and improve continental rankings.

The draw placed Kenya against 1996 champions South Africa, a resilient Guinea side, and regional neighbors Eritrea.

The 2027 edition marks a historic milestone for East Africa, as the tournament returns to the region under the “Pamoja” bid. Scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17 next year, the tournament represents Kenya’s first major hosting duty of this magnitude.

These qualifiers serve as more than just fixtures for Benni McCarthy coached  side but they are a vital component of technical preparation to ensure the team does not just participate as hosts but competes for the title on home soil.

Tournament Formats And Unique Group Stakes

Current logistical arrangements indicate that 48 teams will battle across 12 groups, with 24 teams ultimately advancing to the final showpiece next year.

Although Kenya’s position in the finals is guaranteed, the stakes remain incredibly high for their opponents. Under CAF regulations, because Kenya is already qualified, only one other team from Group D will earn a ticket to the finals.

This setup transforms every Harambee Stars match into a decisive “kingmaker” encounter, as South Africa and Guinea look to secure that single remaining slot.

Elsewhere across the continental draw, heavyweights like Senegal headline Group J alongside Mozambique, Sudan, and Ethiopia, while Group C sets up a massive West African battle featuring Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.

Preparation Goals And Squad Development

The national team is currently intensifying preparations to shake off the ghosts of the 2019 tournament in Egypt, where they exited at the group stage.

To build the necessary chemistry, the squad is scheduled to face Palestine and Kyrgyzstan in high-profile international friendlies on June 3 and June 6, respectively. These matches during the upcoming FIFA window offer head coach Benni McCarthy a crucial opportunity to assess the depth of his squad before the competitive qualifying matches commence.
