AFC Leopards have officially boosted their technical bench following the appointment of Bernard Mwalala as the new first assistant coach.

The club confirmed the arrival of the experienced former Kenyan international, who brings a wealth of tactical knowledge, elite league experience, and a proven winning pedigree to the Den. Mwalala transitions to the club following his recent tenure as head coach of Coastal outfit Bandari FC, signaling a strong intent by the club’s hierarchy to reinforce the technical management unit for the ongoing campaign.

His professional journey took him across top leagues in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, building a reputation for clinical finishing, strong aerial presence, and high tactical awareness on the pitch.

In the domestic league, Mwalala made his mark early on with his sharp goalscoring instincts. His talent quickly attracted regional powerhouses, leading to a high-profile move to Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga SC). During his time in Dar es Salaam, he became a fan favorite, playing a crucial role in Yanga’s domestic dominance and representing the club in regional inter-club competitions like the CECAFA Club Championship.

Beyond his club exploits, Mwalala represented the Kenya national team, Harambee Stars, earning multiple caps during an era defined by fierce regional rivalries. Returning to Kenya, he took the reins at Nzoia Sugar FC, transforming the Bungoma-based side into one of the most attractive, high-pressing attacking teams in the league. Under his guidance, Nzoia Sugar earned promotion to the top flight and established a reputation for disrupting traditional league heavyweights with fluid, fearless football.

Mwalala’s work at Nzoia paved the way for his appointment as head coach of Bandari FC in Mombasa. It was at the Coast where his coaching career reached new heights. Mwalala steered Bandari to a historic FKF Cup victory, securing continental qualification and overseeing memorable runs in the CAF Confederation Cup. Under his leadership, Bandari established one of the defensive records in the league while remaining a threat on fast transitions.

His tactical versatility was further tested and proven during successful tenures with Kakamega Homeboyz and military outfit Ulinzi Stars. At Kakamega Homeboyz, he pushed the team into title contention, missing out on the league crown by the narrowest of margins while playing an aggressive, attack-minded style of play. His subsequent stint at Ulinzi Stars showcased his ability to instil discipline, structure, and physical resilience into a squad.

Most recently, Mwalala served as an assistant coach at FKF Premier League side Shabana FC before joining other top-flight side Bandari FC as head coach.
