Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has revealed that the club enlisted the services of a sports psychologist to restore confidence and stabilise morale after a difficult pre-season threatened to derail their preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.

The intervention came after a promising run at the CECAFA Kagame Cup ended with defeat to Rwanda’s Rayon Sports in the final, followed by a frustrating sequence of seven consecutive matches without a win.

The disappointing run raised concerns about the team’s readiness for the new season, placing Akonnor under pressure from supporters and club management as K’Ogalo struggled to rediscover their rhythm.

However, Gor Mahia’s 4-2 victory over Murang’a Seal in their Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League opener on Tuesday, October 13, offered the Ghanaian tactician some relief and provided evidence that his squad could respond to adversity.

Akonnor Explains Why Gor Mahia Needed a Sports Psychologist

Speaking after the victory at Nyayo National Stadium, Akonnor explained that the prolonged period without a win had affected the team’s confidence, prompting the technical bench to seek professional assistance.

The former Ghana international acknowledged that the players needed a different voice to help them understand the situation, regain composure and approach their responsibilities with renewed belief.

“It was necessary that we brought in a sports psychologist to help the team and just psyche them up. They needed to hear a different voice. He helped the boys to understand certain things which brought calmness and is partly the reason why we won,” Akonnor said as per Mozzart Sport.

The decision highlighted the psychological demands associated with managing one of Kenya’s most successful football clubs, where expectations remain high regardless of the challenges facing the team.

Gor Mahia’s disappointing pre-season had created an uncomfortable atmosphere, with the pressure to deliver results threatening to overshadow the team’s preparations for the domestic campaign.

The involvement of a sports psychologist was intended to address those concerns by helping players manage expectations, rebuild confidence and approach matches with greater mental clarity.

For a club with a demanding fan base and a long history of domestic success, restoring belief can be just as important as improving tactical organisation and physical fitness.

From CECAFA Finalists to a Frustrating Winless Run

Gor Mahia’s struggles were particularly concerning because they followed an encouraging performance at the CECAFA Kagame Cup, where the Kenyan champions reached the final before losing to Rayon Sports.

The tournament had provided optimism about the team’s prospects, but the momentum quickly faded as K’Ogalo failed to register a victory in their next seven matches.

One of the most damaging setbacks came in the FKF Super Cup, where Gor Mahia suffered a 3-1 defeat to Tusker FC.

The result triggered unrest among supporters after the final whistle, underlining the frustration surrounding the team’s performances and increasing scrutiny of the technical bench.

The pressure intensified during the club’s CAF Champions League qualifying campaign, where a lethargic display against Egyptian opponents Pyramids FC further exposed the team’s difficulties.

With results failing to improve, questions emerged about Gor Mahia’s tactical approach, mental resilience and ability to compete effectively against strong domestic and continental opposition.

Akonnor consequently faced the challenge of rebuilding confidence while ensuring his players remained focused on the objectives of the new season.

The Murang’a Seal match therefore represented more than an opportunity to collect three points. It was also a chance for Gor Mahia to break free from the negative atmosphere that had developed during the preceding weeks.

Murang’a Seal Victory Offers Relief but Exposes Defensive Concerns

Gor Mahia responded with a four-goal performance against Murang’a Seal in their league opener, securing a 4-2 victory under the floodlights at Nyayo National Stadium.

The result provided Akonnor with a positive starting point as he seeks to restore stability and guide the club towards another competitive campaign.

However, the performance was not without its shortcomings.

Gor Mahia conceded twice in the final 15 minutes, with former forward Josephat Lopaga scoring both goals for Murang’a Seal.

The late collapse prevented K’Ogalo from finishing the match with a more comfortable margin and raised questions about their ability to maintain concentration when protecting a substantial advantage.

Although the attacking display offered encouragement, the goals conceded suggested that defensive organisation and game management remain areas requiring attention.

Akonnor was nevertheless satisfied with the outcome, acknowledging the importance of securing a victory after the difficult period that followed the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

“Gor is a big club, and the demand to win is always there, but sometimes you undergo some turbulence, which is what we went through after CECAFA, as things did not go well. For that reason, we are happy with the win despite conceding two goals,” he said.

The coach’s comments reflected an understanding that the result mattered significantly to a team attempting to rebuild confidence while meeting the expectations associated with its status.

Akonnor Faces the Challenge of Sustaining Gor Mahia’s Revival

While the victory over Murang’a Seal offered immediate relief, Gor Mahia’s bigger challenge will be translating that result into consistent performances throughout the season.

The psychological intervention may help players handle pressure more effectively, but its impact will ultimately be measured by their performances on the pitch.

Akonnor must now ensure that the improved mood within the dressing room is accompanied by tactical discipline, defensive solidity and greater consistency across the squad.

The late goals conceded against Murang’a Seal also demonstrated why the team cannot afford to relax once it establishes control of a match.

Supporters will expect the victory to mark the beginning of a sustained recovery rather than a temporary escape from the pressure generated by the pre-season results.
