AFC Leopards Resuscitate 28-Year Title Dream to Close in on Gor Mahia

AFC Leopards breathed fresh life into their quest to end a nearly three-decade title drought, securing a pivotal 2-1 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz in a high-stakes Ingo Derby.

The victory effectively slashes Gor Mahia’s lead at the summit of the FKF Premier League to a solitary point, transforming the final stretch of the season into a breathless sprint for the championship.

Both sides looked to assert dominance in a fixture known for its fierce regional rivalry. Leopards entered the fray with the weight of a 28-year wait on their shoulders, but they displayed the composure of veterans from the opening whistle.

The breakthrough arrived in the 23rd minute when Emmanuel Lwangu found the back of the net, sending the traveling supporters into a frenzy. The early goal settled the nerves of the Ingwe faithful and forced Homeboyz to abandon their conservative setup.

Leopards continued to press their advantage throughout the first half, dictating the tempo and restricting Homeboyz’s ability to transition from defense to attack. Their persistence was rewarded deep into first-half stoppage time.

In the 45th minute Samuel Semo pounced on an opportunity to double the lead, clinical in his execution to ensure Leopards headed into the tunnel with a comfortable 2-0 cushion.

The second half saw Kakamega Homeboyz attempt to claw their way back into the contest. Managerial tactical shifts, including the introduction of Samuel Odaro for Glen Otunga in the 62nd minute, aimed to inject fresh energy into the Homeboyz midfield.

Although the hosts enjoyed more possession in the final quarter of the match, the Leopards’ backline remained disciplined and resolute.

Drama arrived in the dying moments of the game. In the fifth minute of added time, Boniface Nyabuto capitalized on a momentary lapse in the Leopards’ concentration to score his maiden club and league goal.

The final whistle confirmed a massive three points for AFC Leopards, who now sit within striking distance of the top spot. All eyes now turn to Gor Mahia’s upcoming clash against Murang’a Seal.
Should the leaders falter, the momentum will shift entirely toward the blue-and-white side of the divide.
