Comoros Presidency Breaks Silence on Chief of Staff’s Medical Evacuation to Nairobi

Comoros Presidency Breaks Silence on Chief of Staff’s Medical Evacuation to Nairobi

Following days of intense speculation and rising political unease in the capital, the Presidency of the Union of the Comoros has issued an official statement regarding the health of Youssouf Mohamed Ali Belou.

The communication aims to stabilize the public narrative after reports surfaced that the Director of Cabinet, who also oversees the nation’s defense portfolio, was urgently moved to Nairobi, Kenya, for specialized medical treatment.

The official dispatch marks the first formal acknowledgment of the crisis since Belou was hospitalized earlier this week. While the administration had initially remained silent, the gravity of the situation became clear as sources confirmed his evacuation to the Kenyan capital to seek advanced care following a sudden health incident.

Official Confirmation of Improved Health Status

In a move to reassure the nation and international observers, the Presidency confirmed that the Chief of Staff has moved past the most critical stage of his illness. The government expressed optimism about his trajectory, highlighting that the medical intervention has yielded positive results.

The Presidency stated:

“The Presidency of the Union of the Comoros is pleased to inform the public of the positive development in the health condition of the Director of Cabinet of the President of the Union, in charge of Defense. After receiving the necessary medical care, his health condition has improved significantly.”

The statement further clarified that while his condition is stable, Mr. Belou will not be returning to his high-pressure duties immediately. Following the advice of the specialists managing his care in Nairobi, he will remain away from the office to prioritize his physical well-being.

“Following the recommendations of his attending physicians, the Director of Cabinet is currently observing a period of rest and recovery in order to promote a prompt and full recovery,” the communication noted.

Strategic Stability and Presidential Gratitude

The timing of this release is critical for President Azali Assoumani’s administration. The absence of such a central figure in the Comorian security and administrative apparatus had triggered a wave of anxiety across Moroni. By providing this update, the executive branch seeks to transition the conversation from one of uncertainty to one of planned recovery.

The Head of State personally acknowledged the outpouring of concern from the Comorian people and the international community, thanking them for their patience and well-wishes during the evacuation and subsequent treatment period.

“The Head of State, together with the entire Cabinet, wishes to express their deep gratitude for the many messages of sympathy and support received during this period. The Presidency of the Union reiterates its wishes for health and serenity to the Director of Cabinet and looks forward to his soon returning to continue his duties in the service of the Nation.”

The news of his progress has brought a sense of relief to the government, which relies heavily on Belou’s coordination.

While his “soon returning” remains a point of focus for the state’s leadership, the presidency’s update has successfully lowered the political temperature, providing the clarity that citizens had been seeking.
