Obwakwa’s  death on Friday, May 1, 2026, marks the end of an era for a man whose name was synonymous with professional excellence, institutional reform, and an unwavering commitment to medical ethics.

Dr. Obwaka passed away at 7 pm at The Nairobi Hospital, the very institution he led as the Chairman of the Board of Directors and where he had dedicated decades of his life to saving others. Reports indicate that he was rushed to the facility following a sudden health emergency but was tragically pronounced dead on arrival. 

His wife, Everose Obwaka, confirmed the heartbreaking news, which quickly resonated across the country, prompting a wave of tributes from the highest levels of government and the medical fraternity.

Dr Job Obwaka: A Career Defined by Excellence and Mentorship

Dr. Obwaka’s journey in medicine began at the University of Nairobi, where he laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished career. As a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, he was a specialist of immense repute, particularly known for his contributions to women’s health.

However, his influence extended far beyond the consultation room. The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) highlighted his role as a mentor, noting that he was instrumental in training and guiding generations of doctors who now serve across the globe. His colleagues respected him not just for his clinical experience, but for a bedside manner that prioritized patient dignity and care.

He chose conviction and truth over convenience, and in doing so, affirmed the enduring value of moral leadership and integrity we so deserve as a country,” said Gachagua.

Kalonzo praised the late doctor for remaining unwavering in his values even under immense pressure, describing him as a “true patriot” and a reformer who strengthened the institutions he served.

“He was a man of principle and conviction who never compromised on his values, even in recent times when he faced immense pressure and intimidation, he remained steadfast, ultimately enduring arrest and emergency medical distress after refusing to compromise his principles,” Kalonzo wrote.

Similarly, former Attorney General Justin Muturi characterized him as a distinguished practitioner who stood firm in the face of adversity, serving as a testament to the values of integrity and courage.
