Ferdinand Omanyala Predicts Major Shift in Continental Athletics Recognition

Africa’s 100-meter record holder Ferdinand Omanyala sees the rapid expansion of top-tier athletics events across the continent as a pivotal moment for African sports.

The landscape of global athletics is undergoing a significant transformation as the number of World Athletics sanctioned competitions in Africa surges.

The 2026 season has solidified this trend, with the global athletics calendar now featuring a robust African circuit. Key World Athletics Gold Label events, such as the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi and the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race in Nigeria, are drawing elite international talent to African soil.

Furthermore, nations like Botswana and South Africa have established themselves as premier destinations through the Botswana Grand Prix and the Simbine Classic.

Beyond sprints and road races, Kenya continues to lead in elite cross-country competitions with the Sirikwa Classic and the Chepsaita Cross Country. Meanwhile, the Addis Ababa Grand Prix in Ethiopia, which debuted in 2026, has already secured an elevation to Gold Label status for 2027.

“It means a lot because it now means we no longer have to travel long distances to other countries in search of races and ranking points. It feels like African athletes are finally being appreciated,” Ferdinand Omanyala was quoted by Mozzart Sport.

Ferdinand Omanyala: Breaking the Travel Barrier and Boosting Rankings

The 2026 Kip Keino Classic champion emphasized that the proliferation of these meets is a signal that the world is finally acknowledging Africa’s sporting infrastructure and fan base. In the past, the pursuit of World Athletics ranking points necessitated grueling travel schedules to Europe, often leaving athletes fatigued before they even reached the starting blocks. Now, the ability to compete at a high level within the region is leveling the playing field.

“There is growing interest in athletics across Africa. I saw it in Ethiopia, I have seen it in South Africa and Botswana, and Kenya’s growth has been incredible as well,” Ferdinard  Omanyala observed.

Strategically, the elevation of events like the Ethiopia Grand Prix provides a streamlined path for local talent to rise through the global rankings. By earning points closer to home, emerging athletes who may not have the sponsorship to travel overseas can now find a pathway to the Olympic Games and World Championships. Ferdinand Omanyala noted that the proximity of these meets makes the “African circuit” a viable and attractive option for elite sprinters.

“With the Ethiopia Grand Prix being elevated to Gold Label status this year, that is a huge boost for us as athletes because we can now earn points and improve our World Athletics rankings simply by competing within Africa, without having to travel so much,” he added.

Ferdinand Omanyala: A More Manageable Circuit and the Diamond League Dream

The physical toll of international travel is a factor often overlooked by fans, but for a 100m specialist, recovery time is everything. Omanyala explained that regional travel within Africa, flights of six hours or less between Nairobi, Gaborone, and Johannesburg, allows for better performance and longevity throughout a long season.

“For me, it is much easier to do a circuit from Kenya to Botswana, South Africa, and Ethiopia. Those are flights of six hours or less, which makes things far more manageable,” he explained.

Looking toward the future, the sprint star is not satisfied with Gold Label status alone. He is actively advocating for the inclusion of more Diamond League meetings on African soil to join the existing event in Morocco. During recent discussions with competition directors, he challenged officials to aim for the pinnacle of the sport’s hosting tiers.

“I even spoke to the Director of Competitions in Ethiopia and asked, ‘Why not give us another Diamond League meeting as well?’ It would be great to have one on this side of Africa, so that we can also host one of the very best events here,” he concluded.
