Gor Mahia Survive Kenya Police Scare to Stay 7 Points Clear of AFC Leopards

Ebenezer Assifuah struck in the closing stages to earn Gor Mahia a vital point as they played out a 1-1 draw with Kenya Police FC in their FKF Premier League match played at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

The result leaves the defending champions with a seven-point cushion at the summit of the FKF Premier League table though they will feel this was a missed opportunity to pull further away from the chasing pack.

A Slow Start or Tactical Caution?

The match started at a slow pace, with both teams appearing cautious in their attacks, perhaps wary of conceding an early goal in such a high-stakes encounter.

However, the Law Enforcers began growing into the match by the 15th minute, with Charles Ouma and Asante Nana exerting their dominance in the middle of the park over Alpha Onyango and Jackson Dwang’.

Can Police Capitalize on Dominance?

Police earned their first real opportunity to break the deadlock in the 20th minute when Aboud Omar stepped up for a free kick after Hernest Malonga was fouled, but his effort sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 22nd minute. Brian Chonjo reacted quickest to pounce on a loose ball following a failed clearance by the Gor Mahia defense, coolly slotting it home to give Kenya Police a 1-0 lead. Gor Mahia responded with a series of frantic attacks, but Samuel Kapen and Shariff Musa lacked the clinical edge required to restore parity immediately.

Will Missed Chances Haunt K’Ogalo?

The 21-time champions wasted a glorious chance to draw level just before the interval. In the 45th minute, Ebenezer Adukwaw rose highest to meet a well-placed cross, but his goal-bound header was acrobatically saved by Daniel Ogembo to keep the visitors ahead at the break.

Gor Mahia emerged for the second half with increased tempo and nearly leveled in the 49th minute, only for Mike Kibwage’s powerful strike to rise over the bar. The tension continued to simmer as Ogembo was shown a yellow card for time-wasting shortly after, as the referee attempted to maintain control of a physical contest. Adukwaw was left rueing another missed chance in the 57th minute when he headed wide from close range.

A Hero in the 87th Minute?

K’Ogalo finally found their lifeline in the 87th minute. Patrick Essombe showed great composure to control a cross from Onyona inside the box, setting up Assifuah, who pounced on the ball to fire home the equalizer.

The draw moves Gor Mahia to 65 points, seven ahead of rivals AFC Leopards. They now turn their focus to a challenging away fixture against Murang’a Seal as the title race enters its final stretch.
