Harambee Stars Midfielder Makes England Switch
Kenya international midfielder Timothy Ouma has completed a season-long loan move to Charlton Athletic from Czech First League champions Slavia Prague.
The 22-year-old has joined the English club with an option to make the transfer permanent, giving him an opportunity to establish himself in English football after gaining experience in Kenya, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Poland.
Charlton confirmed Ouma as their seventh signing of the summer transfer window, adding him to a squad that has already welcomed Ivan Mesík, Billy Koumetio, Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara, Millenic Alli and Nathaniel Chalobah.
“I’m grateful to be here. I’ll give my all and do my best to help the team achieve,” Ouma said after completing the move. “I’m looking forward to seeing the supporters and hearing them cheer every tackle, every duel and every goal.”
The midfielder arrives at The Valley with a reputation as an energetic and technically gifted player who can contribute both defensively and in possession.
His development has been particularly notable since leaving Kenya as an 18-year-old, with his performances in Europe earning him opportunities at increasingly bigger clubs.
From Nairobi City Stars to European Football
Ouma began his senior career with Nairobi City Stars after coming through Riruta Youth Sports Academy and Laiser Hill Academy. His breakthrough came during the 2021/22 FKF Premier League season, when he became one of the standout performers in the City Stars midfield.
He scored seven league goals that campaign, adding nine assists and nine secondary assists. His direct contribution came in 25 of the club’s 45 goals, underlining the attacking influence he possessed despite playing in midfield.
Those numbers helped attract interest from Europe, and Ouma moved to Swedish top-flight side IF Elfsborg in August 2022. The transfer represented a major step in his career, taking him from the Kenyan league into European football at a relatively young age.
His first season in Sweden was largely about adapting to a new footballing environment. Ouma gradually became an important part of the Elfsborg setup and eventually established himself as a midfielder capable of competing at a higher level.
His 2024 campaign proved particularly significant. Ouma scored in Elfsborg’s 2-1 victory away to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, announcing himself on the European stage with a memorable performance. He finished his Elfsborg spell with 42 competitive appearances and three goals across all competitions, including two goals in European competition.
His displays in Sweden attracted the attention of Slavia Prague, who completed his signing in early 2025. The Czech giants had already established themselves among the leading clubs in their country, and Ouma was brought into an environment where competition for places was intense.
Slavia went on to win the Czech First League during the 2024/25 campaign, giving Ouma another domestic championship medal as his European career continued to gather momentum.
His next challenge came in Poland, where he joined Lech Poznań on loan during the 2025/26 season. The move provided another opportunity to play regular football and gain experience in European competitions.
Ouma was part of the Lech side that lifted the Ekstraklasa title after the Polish club sealed the championship with a 3-1 victory over Radomiak Radom. The achievement added another major honour to his young career.
Charlton See Quality and Potential
Charlton manager Nathan Jones believes Ouma’s experience makes him a valuable addition as the club prepares for the new campaign. The manager revealed that the club had followed the midfielder for a considerable period before completing the deal.
“We’re delighted to get Timothy over the line. He’s a player that we’ve monitored for a long, long time and he comes with real good pedigree,” Jones said.
“He’s an athletic, technical midfield player who has had some good experience and he’ll add real quality to our midfield.”
Charlton’s recruitment team has also highlighted Ouma’s physical strength and ability to influence games from the middle of the pitch. Managing Director James Rodwell said the Kenyan fits the profile the club has been targeting as it continues to reshape its squad.
“We’re delighted to bring Timothy to the club. He’s a player we’ve admired for some time and someone who fits the profile we identified as we continue to move the squad forward,” Rodwell said.
“He brings athleticism, quality on the ball and a real presence in midfield, and we’re looking forward to seeing him in a Charlton shirt.”
The permanent option attached to the loan could make the move even more significant. Charlton will have the opportunity to retain Ouma beyond the current season if he meets the conditions attached to the agreement and impresses during his spell.
“We’ve also secured an option to make the transfer permanent, subject to certain conditions, which puts us in a strong position should Timothy contribute in the way we expect him to,” Rodwell added.
Ouma’s career statistics underline the steady progress he has made. He scored seven goals during his time with Nairobi City Stars before moving to Sweden, where he added three competitive goals for Elfsborg, including two in European competition. His role has increasingly centred on winning duels, recovering possession and helping his team progress the ball rather than simply producing goals.
His profile has also attracted recognition at international level. Ouma made his Harambee Stars debut in November 2021 during Kenya’s 1-1 draw against Uganda and has since collected 12 senior caps. He is yet to score for the national team, but his performances have made him part of Kenya’s emerging midfield generation.
Charlton will now hope his mixture of youth, European experience, physicality and technical ability can translate successfully into English football.
