John Methu Ramps Up Pressure on Ruto, Unveils Opposition’s Regional Strategy for 2027
Democracy for the Citizens Party Secretary General-designate John Methu has intensified the opposition’s attacks on President William Ruto, declaring that leaders from different regions are coordinating efforts to defeat him in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with a local television station on Sunday, July 19, 2026, the Nyandarua senator said the opposition was focused on building a nationwide political movement capable of unseating President Ruto when Kenyans head to the polls.
Methu said the opposition was banking on a regional mobilisation strategy, with influential leaders tasked with consolidating support in their respective political strongholds as preparations for the 2027 presidential contest gather momentum.

The remarks come as opposition leaders continue to push for unity ahead of the next General Election, with discussions ongoing over the possibility of fielding a single presidential candidate to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“We have to hunt him down from all directions,” Methu said, referring to President Ruto. “We want the people of Western to unite and hunt him down from that side. Gachagua will be leading us from Mt Kenya, and Matiang’i will be uniting with the people from Gusii land. Sifuna and Natembeya will unite from the western, and they will hunt him from that direction,” Methu said.
Opposition Banks on Regional Political Heavyweights
According to Methu, the opposition intends to strengthen its support base by assigning senior political figures to spearhead mobilisation efforts in different parts of the country.
He identified former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as the leader expected to coordinate political activities in the Mt Kenya region, while former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i would take charge of mobilisation efforts in the Gusii region.
Methu also named Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya as key figures expected to rally support in Western Kenya, describing the approach as part of a broader plan to build a formidable national coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The senator argued that the opposition’s strategy is designed to ensure every major voting bloc is actively engaged as leaders seek to consolidate support across the country.
He maintained that the opposition’s ultimate objective is to remove President Ruto from office through the ballot, insisting that the coalition is already laying the groundwork for the next presidential contest.
“The first person to go home will be William Ruto,” Methu added.
His remarks reflect the increasingly aggressive political messaging emerging from opposition leaders, who have stepped up criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration in recent months.
