Kenya Lands Major Coffee Export Deal as First Premium Shipment Heads to Italy

Kenya has officially entered one of Europe’s largest coffee markets after dispatching its first consignment of premium green coffee beans to Italy, a milestone expected to unlock new export opportunities, improve farmers’ earnings and strengthen the country’s presence in the global coffee trade.

The inaugural shipment, comprising the first of 20 containers, departed for the Port of Trieste under the management of coffee exporter Sumseron Coffee. The flag-off was witnessed by Trade Principal Secretary Regina Ombam and Cooperatives Principal Secretary Patrick Kilemi, marking what government officials described as a strategic breakthrough for Kenya’s coffee industry.

According to the State Department for Trade, the export is part of ongoing efforts to diversify Kenya’s coffee markets, reduce reliance on traditional buyers and secure premium prices for locally produced coffee.

“This milestone reflects the resilience of Kenya’s coffee sector and our commitment to consistently producing coffee that meets the highest international quality standards,” said Trade Principal Secretary Regina Ombam.

Italy Opens New Opportunities

Government officials said Italy presents significant growth potential for Kenyan coffee exporters, given its position as Europe’s third-largest coffee-consuming country with a market estimated to be worth about KSh500 billion.

The State Department for Trade noted that accessing such a high-value market demonstrates increasing international confidence in the quality of Kenyan coffee while creating opportunities to expand export volumes and improve returns for producers.

Officials added that the successful entry into Italy is expected to enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in the premium specialty coffee segment, where quality beans command higher prices.

Focus on Better Returns for Farmers

Ombam said the government is pursuing new trade partnerships to expand Kenya’s coffee export destinations beyond its traditional markets.

Among the markets under consideration are China through the Early Harvest Arrangement, as well as Japan, Algeria and Kazakhstan. The government is also looking to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to unlock additional regional export opportunities.

She said diversifying export destinations would help protect the coffee sector from overreliance on a few buyers while creating stronger demand for Kenya’s premium coffee.

Government officials believe expanding into premium international markets will ultimately translate into better earnings for coffee farmers by increasing competition for Kenya’s high-quality beans.

The Trade Ministry said the strategy forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the coffee value chain, support exporters and boost the country’s foreign exchange earnings.

Officials also noted that improved access to premium global markets would encourage higher production standards and reinforce Kenya’s reputation as one of the world’s leading producers of specialty coffee.

The shipment to Italy represents another milestone in Kenya’s broader agenda to expand its global trade footprint, with the government expressing confidence that continued market diversification will create more economic opportunities across the coffee value chain while increasing the sector’s contribution to the national economy.
