Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi Movement have secured a political vehicle for the 2027 General Election after taking over the leadership of The Equitable Party (TEP).
The development gives the movement an existing registered political party as it prepares for what could become one of the most closely watched presidential contests in Kenya’s recent political history.
Sifuna was unveiled as the new leader and presidential candidate of TEP during a Nairobi event on Sunday, October 4, 2026, with senior figures associated with the Linda Mwananchi Movement attending the function.

The development came days after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) approved reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement name for 90 days. The approval followed a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal that overturned an earlier decision rejecting the proposed name.
The name reservation, however, does not mean Linda Mwananchi is already a fully registered political party. Instead, it gives its promoters a statutory window to proceed with the next stages of establishing the political organisation.
Sifuna has now chosen another route by taking over an already registered party, a move that could give his political project greater certainty as the 2027 election approaches.
Why Linda Mwananchi Chose The Equitable Party
The choice of TEP is closely linked to the difficulties encountered in establishing Linda Mwananchi as a new political party.
The movement had faced a dispute over the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi name. The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal eventually set aside the Registrar’s earlier refusal and directed the ORPP to reserve the name.
The Registrar subsequently approved the Linda Mwananchi Movement political party name for a maximum period of 90 days. That approval, however, did not amount to full registration of a new political party.

The distinction is important because Kenya’s Political Parties Act provides a detailed process for registering political parties.
A completely new party must satisfy requirements covering its founding members, constitution, ideology, membership, governing structures and other statutory obligations before securing full registration.
The law also requires a political party seeking full registration to demonstrate a substantial national presence, including membership from counties across the country and compliance with requirements on gender, ethnic and regional representation.
Taking over an existing registered party therefore provides a different political route.
TEP was registered on March 25, 2022, according to records cited in reporting on the takeover. Its leadership has agreed to restructure the party and accommodate Sifuna and his allies.
The arrangement effectively gives Linda Mwananchi an established political framework while the movement pursues changes to the party’s leadership, constitution, name and other particulars through the legal process.
What The ORPP Process Means
The change is not simply a matter of announcing a new party leader at a political rally.
Kenya’s political parties law establishes procedures for changes involving a registered party’s constitution, rules, officials, name, symbol, slogan, colours and other particulars.
Under Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, a fully registered political party intending to make changes must notify the Registrar.
The Registrar is required to publish notice of the intended change in the Kenya Gazette within the prescribed period. The party must also publish notification in at least two daily newspapers with nationwide circulation.
A period is then provided for representations or objections before the changes can be effected in accordance with the party’s constitution and rules.
That makes the proposed TEP to Linda Mwananchi Movement rebranding a regulatory process rather than an instant political name change.
The political announcement can therefore take place before every aspect of the proposed rebranding becomes legally effective.
That distinction could become important if objections emerge over the proposed name, leadership changes or amendments to the party constitution.

The ORPP political party registration process will consequently remain central to Sifuna’s 2027 strategy.
A Shortcut Compared With Fresh Registration
The strategic advantage of TEP becomes clearer when compared with establishing a completely new political party.
| Area | New Political Party | Existing TEP |
|---|---|---|
| Legal status | Requires registration process | Already registered |
| Membership | Must satisfy statutory requirements | Existing party structure |
| Leadership | New governing structure required | Leadership can be changed through lawful procedures |
| Party name | Subject to reservation and registration | Proposed change handled through statutory process |
| 2027 preparation | Greater time pressure | Immediate political vehicle |
| Coalition negotiations | New entrant | Established party platform |
The arrangement does not remove ORPP oversight.
It does, however, eliminate the need to repeat the entire registration journey that a completely new political party would face.
That could prove decisive with the 2027 election approaching.
Political parties must also meet electoral deadlines relating to membership lists and nominations. A party intending to nominate candidates must comply with requirements under the Elections Act and electoral regulations.
Linda Mwananchi therefore needs an operational party structure well before presidential campaigns enter their final stages.
Sifuna’s Presidential Bid Gains A Formal Platform
The TEP takeover also changes Sifuna’s position within the opposition.
The Nairobi senator has increasingly emerged as one of the most prominent figures associated with the Linda Mwananchi political movement.
His supporters now have a party through which they can organise membership, nominations, candidates and eventually a presidential campaign.
Sifuna has presented the movement around constitutionalism, the rule of law, accountability and equitable development.
At Sunday’s unveiling, he was declared TEP’s presidential candidate, giving the party a direct link to his 2027 ambitions.
The event also attracted several opposition figures, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Senators Godfrey Osotsi, Richard Onyonka and Boni Khalwale, alongside Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
Their presence demonstrated the breadth of political support surrounding the movement.
It also exposed the bigger question facing Kenya’s opposition: whether different presidential ambitions can eventually be merged into one coalition.
The Opposition Unity Puzzle
The Linda Mwananchi project arrives at a complicated moment for the 2027 opposition coalition.
Several senior opposition politicians already have political parties or political vehicles.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, while Babu Owino is associated with the Mwananchi Party. Natembeya has also been linked to separate political initiatives, while other senior figures continue positioning themselves ahead of 2027.
Sifuna’s TEP therefore gives another opposition camp a formal political structure.

That can strengthen his bargaining position in coalition negotiations, but it can also make eventual unification more complicated.
A presidential coalition requires more than public declarations of unity.
Political parties must negotiate leadership, nominations, parliamentary seats, coalition agreements, campaign structures and the distribution of influence.
Every party leader entering those negotiations with an established political vehicle has something to protect.
That is why the Equitable Party takeover could become more than an administrative exercise.
It gives the Linda Mwananchi camp an institutional base from which to negotiate with other opposition formations.
One Party, One Candidate?
The message from Sifuna’s camp is that the new vehicle is ultimately intended to support one presidential candidate.
Suba South MP Caroli Omondi said the political formation would be built around a single leadership structure and one presidential candidate, effectively placing Sifuna’s presidential bid at the centre of the new party.
That ambition will now be tested against the reality of multiple opposition parties.
The question is no longer whether Sifuna has a political vehicle.
He does.
The bigger question is whether TEP, or a renamed Linda Mwananchi Movement, will become a standalone presidential party or form part of a larger coalition before the 2027 ballot.
A stronger party structure could make Sifuna more attractive to potential coalition partners.
At the same time, his growing political profile could force established opposition figures to reconsider their own calculations.
The Sifuna 2027 presidential bid has already changed some of the assumptions surrounding the opposition race, particularly as politicians weigh possible contests involving figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i and Gachagua.
What Happens Next
The next stage will move from political rallies to regulatory compliance.
Linda Mwananchi and TEP must work through the relevant ORPP political party requirements covering leadership changes and proposed amendments.
The proposed change of name will also have to follow the statutory notification and public representation process.
The Linda Mwananchi name has already received a 90-day reservation, but the reservation itself does not make Linda Mwananchi a fully registered political party.
Sifuna has provided a fallback position.
If the rebranding process encounters additional obstacles, he has indicated that the political outfit can continue under the TEP identity and proceed towards the 2027 election.
That gives the camp an important element of political certainty.
The symbolism of “Linda Mwananchi” may be central to Sifuna’s political brand, but The Equitable Party provides the legal infrastructure needed to keep the 2027 project moving.
The challenge now is turning that legal vehicle into a nationwide political organisation capable of competing against President William Ruto and whatever opposition coalition eventually emerges.
The Linda Mwananchi Movement Equitable Party takeover is therefore both a regulatory manoeuvre and a political calculation.

Sifuna has secured a party at a time when opposition groups are racing to establish their positions ahead of 2027.
Whether TEP becomes the centre of a broad opposition coalition or another competing vehicle in a crowded presidential field will depend on the negotiations that follow.
Kenya’s opposition has repeatedly spoken about the need for unity.
The TEP takeover gives Sifuna a stronger seat at that table.
The harder task will be deciding who ultimately sits at the head of it.
