Mashemeji Derby: How Gor Mahia Are Planning to Rebound Against AFC Leopards
On Sunday 26 April, the footballing world in Kenya will hold its collective breath as the 99th edition of the Mashemeji Derby takes center stage at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The match between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia is set to kickoff for 1500 hrs and it transcends mere bragging rights, serving as a pivotal moment in the 2025/26 FKF Premier League title race.
Gor Mahia currently holds the advantage at the top of the league standings with 58 points, holding a slim three-point cushion over their arch-rivals, who sit in second place.
A victory for K’Ogalo would see them stretch their lead to six points, significantly boosting their title defense.
Conversely, a win for AFC Leopards would see them draw level on points, turning the final weeks of the season into a high-stakes thriller.
The build-up to this monumental fixture has not been without its challenges for the defending champions.
K’Ogalo’s technical bench, led by head coach Charles Akonnor, is working overtime to rectify a recent dip in form that has seen the side struggle for momentum heading into this high-pressure atmosphere.
Assistant coach Bismark Kobi-Mensah has been candid about the internal frustrations currently gripping the dressing room as they prepare for the showdown.
Speaking during a recent training session at Kasarani Annex, Kobi-Mensah highlighted two specific areas of concern that the staff is desperate to address before Sunday.
“It (Mashemeji Derby) is a very big and difficult game. We have not been able to win our last three matches, nor have we scored a goal, and that is a very big worry for us. We are focusing on improving many areas like that,” Kobi-Mensah told Azam TV as first quoted by MozzartSport.
Reflecting on their previous meeting, a 1-0 defeat back in December 2025, the 42-year-old coach pinpointed psychological readiness as the fatal flaw that cost them dearly.
“It is one game where we really need a stable temperament and to be tactically ready. In our last derby, we had some bad moments, more so in the first 10 minutes, where the players looked not to be ready mentally to start the match,” he added.
Despite these hurdles, there is a sense of focused determination within the camp. Kobi-Mensah confirmed that the coaching staff has conducted thorough scouting on AFC Leopards, meticulously analyzing their tactical blueprint.
“We have watched AFC Leopards and know their strengths and weaknesses, and we now just need to work and be ready for the match,” he stated.
Both teams will be desperate for maximum points and all eyes will be on Nyayo Stadium to see if Gor Mahia can rediscover their clinical edge.
