Tseikuru Attack: Police Reinforce Security in Kitui Following Deadly Raid
On Saturday, April 25, 2026, a brutal and indiscriminate banditry attack in Kamari village, Tseikuru Sub-County, Kitui County, left seven people dead and several homes destroyed.
The victims, six men and one woman, were reportedly ambushed while working on their farms. The armed assailants, suspected to be a group of approximately 40 camel herders, launched the raid before fleeing into the nearby Mwingi Game Reserve.
The incident, which also left one survivor fighting for his life at the Tseikuru Level IV Hospital, is suspected to be part of an escalating cycle of retaliatory violence between local communities and pastoralist groups over resource access.
Immediate Security Assessment
Following the tragic events, a high-level security delegation was dispatched to the region to stabilize the volatile situation. On Sunday, April 26, 2026, the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), Mr. Eliud Lagat, arrived at the Kwa Kamari Police Station to conduct a comprehensive security assessment.
Upon his arrival, the DIG was received by the Tseikuru Sub-County Commander, Mr. Joakim Mecha (SSP), who provided a detailed briefing on the events of the previous 24 hours.
Accompanied by the Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU), Mr. Ranson Lolmodooni, Mr. Lagat took immediate charge of the situation.
During the visit, the DIG engaged directly with the terrified residents, many of whom had sought refuge in nearby bushland, fearing further incursions. He conveyed heartfelt condolences from the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, to the bereaved families, terming the attack “heinous, cowardly, and barbaric.”
Government Commitment and Call for Peace
The National Police Service has launched an immediate investigation into the massacre, vowing to pursue the criminals until they face the full force of the law. DIG Lagat emphasized that the government maintains zero tolerance for such lawlessness and that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
Addressing the community, the DIG issued a stern directive for calm, urging residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He emphasized that retaliatory actions only fuel the cycle of violence and that grievances must be addressed through legal channels.
Furthermore, the DIG called upon the local population to collaborate with authorities by sharing actionable intelligence to aid the identification and arrest of the culprits.
To provide a sense of normalcy as a new school term approaches, the DIG assured parents and students of their safety, encouraging them to resume school activities without fear.
The National Police Service remains on high alert in the region, with additional reinforcements deployed to restore order, provide security, and promote long-term peace among the affected communities.
