Where Do Most Kenyans Live in USA? Top 5 State Hubs Ranked

The Kenyan diaspora in the United States has evolved into a vibrant, highly educated, and economically influential community whose presence continues to expand across major American cities and states through strong professional networks, academic achievement, entrepreneurship, and growing multi-generational family connections.

Official census figures capture only a baseline, but 2026 demographic projections that include both Kenyan-born residents and the wider multi-generational community suggest the total population now exceeds 200,000. This community is strategically concentrated in specific states that offer a mix of professional opportunities, educational excellence, and established social networks.

According to the latest 2026 data synthesized from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) and World Population Review, five states have emerged as the primary anchors of the Kenyan-American experience.

Kenya Frontline looks at the definitive ranking of the top five states by population, counting down from five to the largest hub.

5. Massachusetts

Massachusetts serves as a significant intellectual and professional hub, with a Kenyan population estimated at nearly 8,000. The diaspora here is heavily concentrated in the Greater Boston area and Middlesex County.

Historically, the state has been a top destination for Kenyan students pursuing higher education at its world-renowned universities.

Many of these individuals have transitioned into the state’s dominant biotechnology, medical research, and legal sectors. This has created a community profile that is exceptionally academic, making Massachusetts a premier center for Kenyan-American professional leadership.

4.California

California remains a cornerstone of the Kenyan experience in America, hosting approximately 9,300 residents.

The community is widely distributed across the state’s major economic engines, from the tech-driven Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area to the expansive healthcare and entertainment sectors of Los Angeles.

While the high cost of living has led to some internal migration toward more affordable regions in the South, California’s status as a global innovation leader continues to attract new Kenyan talent, particularly those specializing in engineering, film, and academia.

3.Minnesota

Minnesota holds the distinction of having the highest concentration of Kenyans relative to its total population, with current estimates around 9,350. The community is densely localized within the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, particularly in Hennepin County. This concentration has allowed the Kenyan diaspora to build a highly visible cultural and political presence.

Drawn by the state’s robust healthcare infrastructure and strong social service networks, Kenyan families have built deep roots here, creating a tight-knit environment that supports a wide array of cultural festivals, churches, and community organizations.

2.Washington

Washington state has emerged as a major powerhouse for the diaspora, with a population approaching 10,000.

The Pacific Northwest’s aerospace and technology industries—anchored by giants like Boeing, Microsoft, and Amazon—have acted as a powerful magnet for high-skilled Kenyan professionals. King County and the Seattle metropolitan area serve as the primary hubs for this community.

The Washington diaspora is noted for its strong professional networking and active social groups, making it one of the most economically influential and prosperous Kenyan communities in the United States.

1.Texas

Texas is the undisputed leader, boasting the largest Kenyan population in the United States with over 18,100 residents.

The Lone Star State has become the ultimate destination due to its booming economy, business-friendly environment, and relatively affordable housing. Dallas and Houston are the primary epicenters, with the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex frequently referred to as the “Kenyan capital” of America.

From thriving logistics firms and engineering consultancies to massive networks of Kenyan healthcare professionals, the Texas community is a diverse and self-sustaining economic force that continues to lead the nation in diaspora growth.
