Zak Vyner eyes better days after difficult Wrexham arrival

Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner is looking forward to the new Championship season with a renewed sense of optimism after an injury-hit start to life at Wrexham.

The 29-year-old defender joined the Welsh club from Bristol City during the winter transfer window of the 2025-26 campaign, arriving at the Racecourse Ground carrying a toe injury that immediately disrupted his introduction to his new surroundings.

Vyner eventually worked his way into Phil Parkinson’s side and began finding his feet at the club, only for another setback to interrupt his progress. A hamstring injury forced him to miss Wrexham’s final five Championship matches of the campaign.

“It’s like a clean slate, I fresh feel and ready to go,” he said in an interview with BBC.

“I came in and had a couple of injuries last season, which is abnormal for me anyway.

“So I was just dealing with that and then coming back in and playing in a somewhat unfamiliar position as well.”

The defender believes the opportunity to complete a full pre-season with Wrexham has given him the chance to put those frustrations behind him and prepare properly for what promises to be another demanding Championship campaign.

A chance to settle and show his best

Vyner’s first few months in north Wales were hardly straightforward. Joining a new club midway through a season is difficult enough, but doing so while managing an injury left him with little time to establish himself and understand the demands of a new team.

Once fit, however, he became an increasingly useful option for Parkinson, who turned to him during a period when Wrexham’s midfield was hit by a series of absences.

The former Bristol City player was asked to operate in midfield during the latter stages of last season, stepping into an unfamiliar role as the squad dealt with injuries to Ben Sheaf and Matty James, while George Dobson was unavailable through suspension.

His willingness to adapt underlined his value to the squad, even if the position was not where he felt most natural. Vyner has always been comfortable contributing wherever required, and his versatility gave Parkinson another option during a difficult period.

Now, though, there is a sense that the defender can finally begin building his Wrexham career from a more stable foundation.

“But I’m feeling now that I’m ready, bedding in with the lads a little bit more and settling in to the place, setting in to everything at the football club, so I’m really looking forward to what the season has in store for me.”

That feeling of belonging could prove important for Vyner. The first half of his Wrexham experience was dominated by interruptions, leaving him with limited opportunities to build consistency.

A full pre-season has changed that. It has allowed him to work alongside his teammates, become more familiar with Parkinson’s methods and prepare physically for the demands of a long Championship season.

The change in position during pre-season has also provided another reason for optimism.

Vyner has been used in a back three during Wrexham’s preparations, returning to the centre-back role where he feels most comfortable. The move could give supporters a clearer look at the player the club hoped to acquire when he arrived from Bristol City.

Back where Vyner feels at home

The defender’s preference for centre-back is clear, although he remains willing to perform whatever role the team requires.

“It’s my most comfortable position, so I feel more at home there,” he added.

“It doesn’t say that if I have to play in centre-mid that I wouldn’t do it or anything like that. I’d give 100% whenever I play on the pitch anywhere, up front, anywhere.

“But I feel more comfortable at centre-half, so hopefully we can see the best version of me there and hopefully that works for us.”

Those words capture the attitude Vyner has brought to Wrexham since his arrival. His willingness to fill gaps helped the team when circumstances demanded it, but his return to centre-back could allow him to play with greater confidence and consistency.

Wrexham having Vyner fully fit and settled could become a significant asset as the Championship offers little room for players to ease themselves into the season, with physical demands, tight schedules and the quality of opposition testing squads week after week.

Vyner’s experience at Bristol City and his adaptability give Parkinson another experienced defensive option. More importantly, the player himself appears to be approaching the campaign without the baggage of last season’s setbacks.

His first Wrexham season was fragmented by injuries, positional changes and the challenge of joining a team in the middle of a campaign. The new season presents a different opportunity.

There is no need to play catch-up from the start. There is no immediate rehabilitation programme dictating his schedule. Instead, Vyner has had the benefit of a full pre-season and time to settle into his new footballing home.

That is why the phrase “clean slate” carries particular weight.

Wrexham will expect their squad to step up as the club continues its journey in the Championship, and Vyner will be hoping to play a bigger role in that challenge.

After a difficult introduction, he now has the chance to show supporters what he can offer when fully fit, comfortable in his preferred position and properly integrated into the team.

If he can do that, the injury setbacks that overshadowed his arrival could quickly become little more than an unwanted footnote in the next chapter of his Wrexham story.
