AFCON 2027: Where, When and Everything You Need to Know About the Qualifiers Draw

CAF has confirmed when Bafana Bafana will learn the identities of their challengers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers following an official announcement regarding the upcoming draw.

The continental football governing body has scheduled the draw for Tuesday, 19 May, setting the stage for what promises to be a historic qualification campaign.

South Africa, having successfully secured spots in the previous two editions of the tournament, will be eager to maintain their resurgence on the African stage as they look toward a unique finals competition hosted across the East African region.

The Strategic Path to East Africa

The qualification format for the 36th edition of the tournament involves 48 nations split into 12 groups of four teams each. To ensure a place at the final tournament, Bafana Bafana must finish among the top two teams in their respective group. This qualification cycle is particularly significant because AFCON 2027 will mark the first time the event is hosted by three nations simultaneously, with Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda joining forces under the “Pamoja” bid.

The timeline for these fixtures has already been established following approval from the FIFA Council during recent meetings held in Vancouver, Canada. The qualifying matches are scheduled to kick off in September 2026 and will run through a series of international windows until the campaign concludes in March 2027.

Bafana Bafana and the Quest for Consistency

South Africa is currently enjoying a period of renewed stability and performance that has seen them become a formidable force in continental football once again.

If Hugo Broos and his men successfully navigate the upcoming group stages, they will achieve the feat of qualifying for three successive AFCON tournaments for the first time since the golden era between 1996 and 2008.

The current squad is bolstered by a mix of experienced local stars and overseas-based talent who have recently made headlines, including South African youngsters lifting trophies in England and prolific goalscorers making their mark in the CAF Champions League.

The announcement of the draw date provides the technical team with a clear deadline to finalize their scouting and analytical preparations.

As the identities of the three opponents remain unknown until the ceremony on May 19, the goal remains the same for the 1996 champions. With the qualifiers starting shortly after the conclusion of the current domestic season, the focus will shift entirely toward ensuring that the South African flag is among those flying in East Africa come 2027.
