Dodoma Jiji Memorabilia Floods Streets as Fans Immortalize Historic Yanga Giant-Killing Moment

Tanzania Mainland Premier League side Dodoma Jiji sparked scenes of pure joy, celebrations, and excitement across Dodoma City after securing a historic first-ever victory against Young Africans SC with a 3-2 win, as fans and football stakeholders organized celebrations across the city to mark the landmark result that has shaken the 2025/26 title race.

The historic moment was recorded recently at Airtel Stadium in Singida where Dodoma Jiji FC ended their long wait for a win against Yanga since joining the Mainland Premier League during the 2020/21 season.

Before the historic victory, Dodoma Jiji FC had faced Yanga 11 times without registering a single win, managing only one draw while losing all the remaining matches, a situation that had made the club appear to struggle whenever facing the Tanzanian giants.

Is this 3-2 victory the defining moment of Dodoma Jiji FC’s 2025/26 season?

This season, Dodoma Jiji FC has also shown improvement against Tanzania’s traditional football powerhouses after collecting their first-ever point against Simba SC following a draw in the first-round league encounter. Prior to that result, Dodoma Jiji FC had lost every league match against Simba SC since gaining promotion to the top flight.

The victory against Yanga also ended the league leaders’ unbeaten run in the Mainland Premier League this season while increasing pressure in the title race. Before the defeat, Yanga had opened a five-point gap over rivals Simba SC, but after losing to Dodoma Jiji FC, Simba responded with a 3-0 victory over Mashujaa FC at Lake Tanganyika Stadium in Kigoma, reducing the gap to just two points.

Yanga now lead the league standings with 54 points while Simba SC follow closely with 52 points, with both clubs remaining with seven matches before the end of the season, a situation that has intensified the title race.

After the match, Dodoma turned into a city of celebrations as Dodoma Jiji FC supporters held parties, street celebrations and processions to mark the historic victory. On social media, photos and videos circulated showing shopping bags and different items printed with the match result reading “Dodoma Jiji FC 3-2 Yanga,” highlighting how emotional and memorable the win was for the club’s supporters.

Can the Dodoma “giant-killers” ride this wave of excitement into continental qualification?

Apart from ending their winless run against Yanga, the victory has boosted Dodoma Jiji FC’s hopes of finishing in the top four and securing a place in continental club competitions for the 2026/27 season.

Currently, Dodoma Jiji FC sit seventh on the league table with 32 points after 23 matches, having won eight games, drawn eight and lost seven, while scoring 22 goals and conceding 23. The club is now only six points behind fourth-placed Singida Black Stars, keeping their hopes alive for a top-four finish.

Since the two clubs started meeting in the Mainland Premier League, Yanga remain the highest-scoring side in their head-to-head record with 34 goals compared to Dodoma Jiji FC’s seven goals, while the recent victory was Dodoma Jiji FC’s first win in 12 meetings.

Dodoma Jiji FC secretary Johnson Fortunatus said the victory has boosted morale within the squad and proved the team can compete against any club in the league.

“This is a historic victory for our club and our supporters. We thank our fans for the huge support they have continued to give us throughout the season. Now we are focusing on the remaining seven matches starting with our game against Mashujaa FC on May 21 at CCM Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma,” said Johnson.
