Tanzania’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) continue to gain momentum, bringing renewed hope to Championship League side Polisi Tanzania following the signing of a Sh2.1 billion contract for the construction of the modern Majengo Stadium in Moshi Municipality.

The project, expected to transform the football landscape in Kilimanjaro Region, was officially signed on Friday, May 15, 2026 between Moshi Municipal Mayor, Engineer Zuberi Kidumo, and contractor Joseph Mrema from Sibstone Company Limited during a ceremony held at the municipal offices in Moshi Town.

The second phase construction project at Majengo Ward is expected to be completed within nine months and will have a capacity of more than 15,000 spectators, a development seen as a major boost for football clubs in the region, including Polisi Tanzania which competes in the Championship League.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Moshi Municipal Mayor Engineer Zuberi Kidumo said the municipal council is committed to ensuring the project is completed on time before the start of AFCON 2027, while also praising President Samia Suluhu Hassan for creating an enabling environment for development projects.

“We have not faced any setbacks since restructuring this project. Our main goal is to see the stadium completed before AFCON because finishing it afterward would not have the same significance as completing it on time,” said Kidumo.

Municipal Director Explains AFCON Strategy

Moshi Municipal Director Mwajuma Nasombe said the project was inspired by Tanzania’s opportunity to host AFCON 2027, with Moshi aiming to become a training base for teams participating in the tournament.

She noted that during the previous financial year, the council allocated Sh656 million for the first phase before redesigning and upgrading the project to meet modern international standards required for major football competitions.

The works to be undertaken include completion of the main stand, dressing rooms, referees’ rooms, toilets, installation of FIFA-standard artificial turf and modern ICT systems.

Nasombe added that the investment will also open tourism and business opportunities, especially due to Moshi’s proximity to Mount Kilimanjaro, one of Africa’s leading tourist attractions that is expected to attract visitors attending football-related activities.

Contractor Promises Quality and Timely Delivery

Contractor Joseph Mrema assured stakeholders that the project would be completed within the agreed timeframe while maintaining high construction standards.

“We are action-oriented people, and we will ensure the project is completed on time and with the required quality,” he said.

Kilimanjaro Regional Football Association (KRFA) Secretary Abdallah Thabit said the arrival of football teams in Moshi during AFCON preparations would open a new chapter in sports tourism and create employment opportunities for young people.

He said the initiative aligns sports development with tourism growth, supporting Tanzania’s broader national development vision.

Earlier, Moshi District Administrative Secretary Shaban Mchomvu, speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner, said the project would strengthen the sports sector while creating opportunities for talented youth.

Residents See New Hope for Talent and Employment

Football stakeholders and residents in Moshi have also welcomed the project, saying it will uplift football standards in the region.

Football fan Ramadhani Mushi said the stadium would help nurture young talents and attract major football clubs to Moshi.

“For many years we have lagged behind in sports infrastructure, but this is a new beginning. Young people will finally have a quality environment to showcase their talents,” he said.

Small-scale trader Neema John also said increased football activities would stimulate local businesses.

“This is a major opportunity for us. Whenever people come for matches, we expect more customers and better business,” she said.

New Stadium Expected to Strengthen Polisi Tanzania

However, much attention remains focused on Polisi Tanzania, a club that has long struggled with inadequate football infrastructure, affecting both training sessions and home matches in the Championship League.

Speaking by phone on May 16, 2026, the club’s Information Officer Inspector Frank Lukwaro described the completion of Majengo Stadium as a major breakthrough.

“First of all, this is a huge opportunity. We congratulate the authorities for improving Majengo Stadium because it will greatly benefit football in Kilimanjaro,” said Lukwaro.

He explained that the club has frequently struggled to secure a reliable venue for matches and training, especially when Ushirika Stadium is occupied for other activities, making the new stadium a long-term solution.

“We believe once the stadium is completed and approved by TFF and CAF, it will host our home matches, something that will boost morale and competitiveness,” he added.

Lukwaro further noted that beyond benefiting Polisi Tanzania, the stadium will also serve teams from neighboring regions such as Tanga and Manyara while stimulating the local economy through increased sporting activities.

Overall, the Majengo Stadium project is expected to be completed on February 8, 2027 as part of broader efforts to elevate football standards in Kilimanjaro and unlock new economic opportunities through sports.
