Inside what Patrice Motsepe Told Hussein Mohamed as FKF Crisis Deepens

Corruption allegations and a high-stakes leadership battle have created a volatile backdrop for CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s visit to Nairobi.

Motsepe arrived in Nairobi on Monday to champion the Africa Forward Summit and review the Pamoja AFCON 2027 progress, the ground beneath the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) continues to shift.

The federation is currently fighting on several fronts including a KSh 64 million lawsuit from Topline Logistics Limited over unpaid CHAN 2024 bills and an internal power struggle that has seen the National Executive Committee (NEC) attempt to oust President Hussein Mohamed.

Despite the chaos in the boardroom, the official engagement earlier today in Nairobi focused on the technical and diplomatic requirements of hosting Africa’s biggest sporting event.

Dr. Motsepe, joined by a powerful delegation including Sports CS H.E. Salim Mvurya and regional FA presidents from Uganda and Tanzania, conducted a thorough review of the three-nation “Pamoja” preparations.

The Hussein Mohamed and NEC Standoff

“We held a successful meeting chaired by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, to review the Pamoja Afcon 2027 preperations across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania,” said Hussein Mohamed in a statement following the meeting.

The statement served as a significant public-facing rebuttal to recent attempts by the NEC to suspend him over alleged misappropriation of Sh42 million in CHAN funds. While the Sports Disputes Tribunal has temporarily halted his ouster, the friction between Mohamed and the Mariga-led NEC faction remains a major concern for CAF.

Dr. Motsepe’s message to Mohamed was one of conditional confidence. Sources suggest that behind closed doors, the CAF President was clear: the “Pamoja” bid cannot afford the distraction of administrative instability.

By appearing alongside Mohamed, Motsepe signaled a preference for institutional continuity but emphasized that “transformative partnership” requires a unified and transparent federation. The CAF President’s direct engagement with the localized dispute underscores how high the stakes are for the 2027 tournament.

Legal Woes and the KSh 64 Million Debt

Adding to the federation’s woes is the escalating legal battle with Topline Logistics Limited. The company has moved to court claiming that the FKF failed to remit KSh 64 million for services provided during the CHAN 2024 tournament, despite the Ministry of Sports reportedly releasing the funds. This financial dispute, coupled with the NEC’s internal “coup” attempt, has painted a picture of a federation in deep crisis just as the eyes of the continent turn toward East Africa.

“Dr. Motsepe commended the significant progress made by the three host nations and expressed confidence that Pamoja AFCON 2027 will be a resounding success,” the committee noted in its official briefing.

However, the contrast between this optimistic outlook and the ongoing litigation is stark. The host nations reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, but for Kenya, the path to 2027 is cluttered with legal hurdles and leadership friction.
