Kenya’s Harambee Starlets return to the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a 10-year absence when they face tournament hosts Morocco in their Group A opener at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat on Sunday.

The match marks the beginning of Kenya’s quest to make history after qualifying for the continental showpiece for only the second time, while Morocco will be hoping home advantage can propel them to the title after finishing runners-up in the previous two editions.

For Beldine Odemba’s side, the challenge could hardly be tougher. The Atlas Lionesses have emerged as one of Africa’s strongest women’s teams in recent years and boast a squad packed with players who featured at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

However, Kenya arrive in Morocco with renewed confidence following an impressive qualification campaign and will be determined to prove they can compete with the continent’s elite. Morocco enter Sunday’s encounter as clear favourites.

The Atlas Lionesses possess greater tournament experience, higher-quality individual players and the advantage of playing in front of passionate home supporters. Their attack, led by captain Ghizlane Chebbak, has consistently delivered on the biggest stage, while Jorge Vilda has assembled one of Africa’s most balanced squads.

Kenya’s best chance lies in staying compact defensively and frustrating Morocco during the opening stages. Odemba’s side demonstrated throughout qualifying that they can remain disciplined without the ball before launching quick counter-attacks through players such as Terry Engesha and Esse Akida.

If Kenya can avoid conceding early, they could make life difficult for Morocco. However, sustaining that defensive effort over 90 minutes against one of Africa’s most potent attacks will be a significant challenge.
