NMB Backs World Champion Alphonce Simbu Ahead of Historic TCS Sydney Marathon Challenge

National Microfinance Bank (NMB) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Tanzanian sporting excellence by sponsoring reigning world marathon champion Alphonce Simbu with Tanzanian Sh10 million as he intensifies preparations for the 2026 TCS Sydney Marathon, one of the world’s most prestigious road races.

The sponsorship was officially presented in Arusha, where NMB executives described the support as part of the bank’s broader commitment to empowering Tanzanian athletes capable of competing successfully on the global stage. The marathon is scheduled to take place on August 30, 2026, in Sydney, Australia.

This year’s TCS Sydney Marathon is expected to attract more than 40,000 runners from around the world, including elite athletes from East Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. The race will cover the classic marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres, beginning on Miller Street before finishing at the iconic Sydney Opera House Forecourt, offering one of the most spectacular marathon finishes in world athletics.

Speaking during the sponsorship handover ceremony, NMB Northern Zone Manager Baraka Ladislaus said the bank had decided to become part of Simbu’s journey to ensure that financial challenges would not interfere with his preparations.

According to Ladislaus, the sponsorship is intended to provide the athlete with peace of mind so that he can dedicate all his energy to training and representing Tanzania with distinction at one of the biggest international marathon events.

“We believe in Alphonce Simbu because he has continued to write history for Tanzania in athletics. We are confident that he will once again deliver an outstanding performance,” Ladislaus said.

“We wish him successful preparations and the very best in Australia. Tanzania will be proudly behind him.”

Beyond the financial sponsorship, NMB also presented Simbu with an NMB bank card together with the NMB Band, a wearable digital payment device developed in partnership with Mastercard. The payment band allows users to make secure and convenient cashless transactions anywhere in the world where Mastercard or Visa payment systems are accepted.

Ladislaus explained that the service will enable Simbu to carry out financial transactions smoothly throughout his international travel and during the competition period without unnecessary inconvenience.

Receiving the sponsorship, Simbu expressed his gratitude to NMB, saying the support would boost his preparations as he targets another major international title.

The Tanzanian star, who will compete alongside fellow national marathon standout Magdalena Shauri, said his preparations have progressed well and that he is currently in excellent physical condition.
“My preparations are going very well and I am in good health,” Simbu said.

“I am ready for the challenge of the Sydney Marathon and I strongly believe I can perform well. My goal is to return home with the gold medal.”

He also called upon Tanzanians to continue supporting him through prayers and encouragement as he prepares for one of the strongest marathon fields ever assembled.

“I ask all Tanzanians to continue praying for my health and success. I will do everything possible to bring home the trophy and make our country proud.”

The President of the Athletics Tanzania federation, Rogath Steven, praised NMB’s contribution, describing corporate support as an important pillar in helping Tanzanian athletes compete successfully against the world’s best.

Steven said Athletics Tanzania has implemented comprehensive preparations aimed at ensuring the country’s athletes remain competitive at international championships.

He revealed that both Simbu and Shauri have been conducting their training in Ilboru, Arusha, where weather conditions and terrain closely resemble those expected in Sydney.

According to Steven, the training programme is specifically designed to help the athletes gradually adapt to environmental conditions they will experience in Australia.

“We have great confidence in both Alphonce Simbu and Magdalena Shauri because their preparations are progressing very well,” Steven said.

“We believe Tanzania has a genuine opportunity to compete for gold medals in Sydney.”

Simbu enters the Sydney Marathon as one of the biggest attractions after enjoying an extraordinary rise in world athletics over the past two years.

In 2025, he made history by winning the men’s marathon gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking 2:09:48 to become the first Tanzanian athlete ever to win a World Championship title in athletics.

His remarkable achievement elevated Tanzania onto the highest step of the global athletics podium and cemented Simbu’s status among the world’s elite marathon runners.

His career achievements also include a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships in London and a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, making him one of Tanzania’s most decorated long-distance athletes.

Simbu’s personal best of 2:02:47 ranks him among the fastest marathon runners in the world and underlines his credentials as one of the leading contenders in Sydney.

The organisers of the TCS Sydney Marathon have confirmed an exceptionally strong elite men’s field led by Simbu, who will make his Sydney Marathon debut as the reigning world champion.

The Tanzanian arrives in Australia in outstanding form after finishing runner-up at both the 2025 and 2026 Boston Marathon, reinforcing his consistency at the highest level of marathon racing.

Among his strongest rivals will be Ethiopia’s Sisay Lemma, whose personal best of 2:01:48 makes him the fastest athlete in the field. The former Boston and London Marathon champion brings extensive experience from the Abbott World Marathon Majors circuit.

Kenya’s Timothy Kiplagat, who owns a personal best of 2:02:55, also enters as a serious medal contender after establishing himself among the world’s fastest marathon runners. His impressive performances include setting the Melbourne Marathon course record and representing Kenya as an Olympic reserve athlete.

Another Kenyan challenger is Vincent Ngetich, who has built an impressive reputation through consistent podium finishes across the Abbott World Marathon Majors series. He finished second in Berlin in 2023 before securing consecutive third-place finishes at the Tokyo Marathon in both 2024 and 2025.

Adding further excitement is Ethiopian distance-running sensation Hagos Gebrhiwet, who will make his marathon debut after an outstanding career on the track. The Olympic medallist is the second-fastest 5,000 metres runner in history and one of the fastest half-marathon runners ever recorded.

The defending Sydney Marathon champion Hailemaryam Kiros returns after setting the fastest marathon ever run on Australian soil with his winning time of 2:06:06 in 2025. Fellow Ethiopians Addisu Gobena and Lesotho’s Tebello Ramakongoana, who recently produced a personal best of 2:04:18, also strengthen an already world-class field.

The women’s race promises to be equally competitive

Kenya’s reigning world champion and Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir headlines the elite women’s field with the fastest personal best of 2:14:43. She will face strong opposition from compatriot Irine Cheptai, Ethiopia’s Ruti Aga, Haven Hailu, Uganda’s Stella Chesang, and Tanzanian national record holder Magdalena Shauri, who continues to establish herself among the world’s leading female marathon runners.

Sydney organisers have described the 2026 edition as one of the deepest marathon fields ever assembled, featuring 25 men with personal bests under 2:10 and 24 women with personal bests below 2:26, highlighting the extraordinary level of competition awaiting both Simbu and Shauri.
For Tanzania, however, the spotlight will firmly remain on Alphonce Simbu.

Having already rewritten the nation’s athletics history, the reigning world champion now travels to Sydney carrying not only the hopes of millions of Tanzanians but also the confidence of corporate partners such as NMB, Athletics Tanzania and an entire sporting nation eager to witness another historic performance on the world stage.
