Harambee Stars Prospect Takes Major Step Towards Bundesliga Breakthrough

Harambee Stars prospect Maik Nelson Afri Akumu has moved a significant step closer to fulfilling his Bundesliga dream after earning a place in FC Koln’s senior squad for the club’s pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

The 18-year-old winger, regarded as one of Kenya’s brightest overseas prospects, has been training alongside FC Koln’s first-team stars as head coach Rene Wagner assesses his squad ahead of the club’s return to Germany’s top flight.

Akumu, who is officially registered with FC Koln II, has enjoyed a rapid rise since joining the German club last year and now finds himself with an opportunity to impress the coaching staff before the new Bundesliga season begins.

His growing importance within the club was evident when he participated in FC Koln’s official pre-season Media Day at the Geissbockheim training complex on July 17, an occasion typically reserved for first-team players preparing for the upcoming campaign.

The teenager now faces arguably the biggest opportunity of his young career as he looks to convince Wagner that he deserves a place in the senior squad for the new season.

Rapid Rise Continues at FC Koln

Akumu’s inclusion in the first-team setup marks another important milestone in a football journey that has been built on steady progression through Germany’s youth ranks.

The talented attacker joined FC Koln in August 2025 after leaving Hertha BSC, where he had developed through every academy level from the Under-9 side.

His development at Hertha attracted considerable attention after he was promoted to both the Under-19 and reserve teams despite still being eligible to feature for the Under-17 side.

That accelerated pathway highlighted the confidence coaches had in his ability to compete against older opponents, with his technical quality and maturity standing out throughout his academy career.

FC Koln moved quickly to secure his signature, offering him a long-term contract as part of the club’s plans to invest in emerging young talent capable of making the step into professional football.

Less than a year later, that faith appears to be paying off.

Although he remains registered with FC Koln II, his involvement in senior pre-season preparations suggests the coaching staff see genuine first-team potential in the teenager.

The pre-season period is often regarded as one of the most important phases for academy players seeking promotion, giving young footballers the opportunity to train alongside established professionals while showcasing their abilities in friendly matches.

Akumu has already made a positive impression after featuring in FC Koln’s convincing 5-0 victory over academy partners FC Rheinsud Koln during a pre-season friendly.

His performances over the coming weeks could determine whether he begins the season with the senior side or continues his development with the reserve team.

Versatility Makes Akumu a Valuable Prospect

One of Akumu’s biggest strengths is his versatility across the attacking positions.

Naturally a left winger, he is equally comfortable operating on the opposite flank or leading the line as a central striker, giving coaches multiple tactical options.

His game is built around explosive acceleration, close ball control and the confidence to attack defenders in one-on-one situations.

Those qualities have earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting young attacking players with Kenyan heritage currently developing in Europe.

His willingness to take on defenders and create chances has also made him an exciting player to watch during his rise through Germany’s youth system.

Modern football increasingly values attackers capable of playing across multiple positions, and Akumu’s flexibility could strengthen his chances of breaking into FC Koln’s Bundesliga squad.

Should he continue his impressive development, the teenager could soon become another graduate to emerge from Germany’s highly competitive football system.

FC Koln will begin life back in the Bundesliga with a home fixture against Hoffenheim after opening their campaign in the DFB-Pokal against Wurzburger Kickers.

Whether Akumu features in either competition will largely depend on his performances throughout pre-season.

The teenager knows that every training session and friendly appearance represents another opportunity to convince Wagner that he is ready for senior football.

Kenya Keeping Close Watch

Akumu’s progress will also be closely monitored in Kenya, where he remains eligible to represent Harambee Stars despite featuring for Germany at youth level.

Born in Berlin on July 13, 2008, to a Kenyan father and an English mother, the winger qualifies to play for three different nations.

He has already represented Germany at Under-17 level, but he is yet to make a competitive senior appearance, meaning FIFA regulations still allow him to switch his international allegiance.

That possibility has generated considerable excitement among Kenyan football supporters eager to see more overseas-born talent strengthen the national team.

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has made no secret of his desire to recruit eligible players competing in Europe’s top leagues as Kenya builds towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Akumu fits that long-term vision perfectly.

His age means he still has several years to continue developing before reaching his full potential, while regular exposure to German football could significantly accelerate his progress.

FC Koln already boasts another player eligible to represent Kenya in winger Linton Maina.

McCarthy has reportedly held discussions with Maina as part of efforts to convince him to commit his international future to Harambee Stars.

Landing players competing in one of Europe’s strongest leagues would represent a major boost for Kenya as preparations continue for the expanded Africa Cup of Nations.

A Defining Season Beckons

The coming months could prove decisive in Akumu’s career.

Breaking into a Bundesliga squad at just 18 years old would represent a remarkable achievement and underline the enormous potential that has made him one of Kenya’s most promising young footballers abroad.

Competition for places at FC Koln remains intense, with experienced senior players also battling for starting roles following the club’s promotion back to Germany’s top flight.

That challenge, however, is unlikely to discourage a player whose career has already been defined by rapid progression.

Each step of Akumu’s journey has come through consistently impressing coaches and earning opportunities at increasingly higher levels.

His inclusion in the first-team pre-season squad suggests he has once again caught the attention of those making key decisions at the club.

Even if a permanent promotion does not arrive immediately, continued exposure to senior football will provide invaluable experience as he continues his development.

Kenyan football has watched several talented youngsters emerge in Europe in recent years, but few have reached the doorstep of the Bundesliga as quickly as Akumu.

The teenager now has the chance to turn promise into reality.

Strong performances during pre-season could secure him a place in FC Koln’s plans for the new campaign and move him one step closer to becoming the latest Kenyan-eligible player to feature in one of Europe’s elite leagues.

Should that happen, Harambee Stars would gain another exciting option as McCarthy continues assembling a squad capable of competing with Africa’s best when Kenya hosts the continent’s biggest football tournament in 2027.
