Why Did Dr. Job Obwaka Collapse? Inside Investigation Into the Medic’s Final Moments

Former Nairobi Hospital Board member Job Obwaka died on May 1, 2026, after being rushed to the facility he once led, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The passing of the 83-year-old veteran gynaecologist has sparked an intensive investigation, as authorities and family members seek to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to his sudden collapse.

A post-mortem conducted at Lee Funeral Home has provided the first definitive look into the clinical cause of his passing.

Family representative Joseph Ndungu confirmed that while an immediate cause has been established, the journey to full clarity continues. The family is currently in agreement with the preliminary findings, which suggest the veteran medic’s passing was linked to an existing health condition. However, the investigation remains open as specialists work to rule out any external contributing factors.

“Further examinations would still be undertaken to provide more clarity on what led to the fatal episode,” Ndungu noted. The medical community and the public have been following the case closely, given Dr. Obwaka’s prominent stature and the sudden nature of his death.

“However, a toxicology report is still being conducted to determine the exact cause,” Ndungu added as quoted by The Star.

Until these results are returned from the Government Chemist, the case remains under active scrutiny.

The legal dimension of the case has seen the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) take a central role. Detectives informed the court that they are probing several theories, including the possibility of poisoning. This line of inquiry stems from an affidavit filed by Sergeant Rhoda Nzioka, which led to the 10-day detention of Beatrice Wangari to allow for the conclusion of the forensic process.

Forensic Scrutiny and the Battle in Court

According to the DCI, samples were collected from the residence where Dr. Obwaka had been shortly before he was rushed to the hospital.

“There are certain samples that are to be forwarded to the government analyst, and possibly as a result of two tests or examinations, maybe subsequently a mental assessment examination,” the prosecutor told the court.

The defense, however, has dismissed the state’s suspicions as unfounded. Wangari’s legal team argued that previous searches of the premises recovered no incriminating evidence. They have labeled the focus on food and environmental samples as an investigative overreach, maintaining that there is no evidence to support the theory of foul play.

A Final Farewell to a Medical Giant

Despite the ongoing legal and forensic developments, the focus for many remains on the monumental legacy Dr. Obwaka leaves behind. A respected leader in women’s health, he is celebrated for a career defined by compassion and excellence. His family described him as a pillar of strength whose absence leaves a profound void in both the medical profession and his home.

“He was not just a doctor to many but a source of hope and reassurance to families during some of their most critical moments,” a family statement read.

As the investigation continues, the family is proceeding with arrangements to honor his life.

Daily meetings are being held at CITAM Valley Road, with a memorial service set for May 13. The cortege will leave Lee Funeral Home on May 14 for Musanda village, Mumias, where the late doctor will be laid to rest the following day.
